Against the backdrop of the continuing legal wrangling concerning same sex marriage in Alabama, Anne Susan Diprizio has been arrested for misdemeanor disorderly conduct while attempting to perform a same sex marriage in Autauga County, Alabama. Despite continuing to issue marriage certificates to same sex couples, the Autauga County Probate Office stopped performing weddings on February 6, claiming the decision was related to work flow and not the recent federal court order lifting the ban on same sex marriage. Claiming to be an ordained non-denominational minister, Ms. Diprizio offered to perform the marriage for a same sex couple who had their license. Ms. Diprizio was arrested after refusing to leave the premises despite being warned she would be arrested if she did not. After being released on a $1,000.00 bond, Ms. Diprizio stated that she would “be back” and perform wedding ceremonies if asked.
