Your Social Media Can Come Back To Haunt You In Family Court

We live in an age when almost everyone has a social media presence. If you are considering getting divorced or appearing in court for any reason, you should be aware that what you post on social media can come back to harm your case. For instance, in a Las Vegas custody case, it is important for the court to see you as a parent who will co-parent. If, however, you post on your social media that your ex is a jerk, you will never get over how she hurt you and you will never stop fighting with her, your ex could present that post to the court as proof that you do not co-parent with her. If your ex claims that you do not really spend time with the children because you are too busy partying and she finds pictures you posted while at a bar on a night when you are supposed to be home with the children, it would help her prove the validity of her argument. Financial claims can also be effected by posts on social media. Let’s say you are in court because you have asked for temporary spousal support. Your attorney argues that you do not have enough money to pay your basic necessities, but your spouse’s attorney provides the court with a picture you posted of yourself with an expensive new outfit after having a haircut and spa treatments. The court would not likely believe you were having trouble paying for basic necessities after seeing that you had hundreds or even thousands of dollars to spend extravagantly. Regardless of what you are posting, do not think that merely blocking your ex from your social media will protect you. You never know what other people will share with your ex not even knowing how it could harm you or if your ex has “friended” under the guise of a different person. The attorneys at Pecos Law Group can help you determine what is and what is not appropriate for you to post on social media.
