Five Suggestions For Family Law Attorneys Dealing With their Clients

On Behalf of | Apr 18, 2016 | Attorney Blogs

  • Answer questions like a person, not a politician. Whether good or bad, most clients want a direct, straight answer to their questions.
  •

  • Be prompt and always respond to emails or phone calls, even if the response is “I can’t fully respond now, but I will get back to you as soon as I can.”
  •

  • Don’t make excuses. Clients don’t care if you have a cold, one of your kids kept you up all night, you’re on vacation, or you are otherwise distracted.  Clients have paid you and expect your full attention to their case.
  •

  • Don‘t try to be their friends. They hired you to represent them, not to be their friends and if you get too close, you lose your objectivity, which is essential to representing their interests.
  •

  • Most important, do not ever say “You’re not my only client.” They know they are not your only client, but once those words are uttered, your relationship with that client will be forever damaged.
