Five Ways To Help Your Child Cope With Divorce

For most people, the worst part of their divorce is watching how it affects their children. Here are some helpful reminders of how to help your child through this difficult time and into the future:

1. Stay involved in your child’s life. Attend events, even if it isn’t your custodial time. Most judges in Las Vegas specifically order that both parents are allowed to be at special events and have time to greet the child and take family pictures regardless of whose custodial time it is. Also, take advantage of calling, texting and video chatting to stay involved directly with your child. Don’t forget to keep up with your child’s education, extracurricular activities, religious training and medical concerns.

2. Don’t fight about your child in front of him or her. If you and your child’s other parent can’t behave in front of the child, don’t be alone together with the child. Utilize exchanges at school or other public locations where you are less likely to fight.

3. Let your child enjoy his or her time with the other parent without feeling guilty. Encourage your child to have fun with the other parent. If you can’t say anything nice about the other parent, don’t say anything at all, but do let your child know that you are happy that he or she has a good time with the other parent.

4. Communicate directly with the other parent rather than through your child. In fact, most judges in Las Vegas order this. If you have trouble communicating with the other parent, do so via email, text or an on-line parenting tool such as OurFamilyWizard.com.

5. Take time for yourself. Your child knows when you are upset and stressed out. Everyone needs time to himself or herself to relax. Take advantage of the time that your child is with the other parent, so that you can be the best parent you can be when the child is with you.
