Social Security Benefits During Marriage and After Divorce

Most people know that they may have Social Security Benefits through their spouse during marriage or upon death.  Married couples deciding when and how to collect benefits can be confusing.   Many people, however, do not realize that they may collect Social Security benefits from their former spouse, if they were married for at least ten years and are not currently married.  Where in an intact marriage only one can claim benefits, for qualifying divorced spouses, both may claim benefits.

When approaching retirement age, each individual should obtain an estimate of their benefits from the Social Security Administration and with consultation with a qualified Certified Public Account or financial planner, calculate the best way to apply for benefits.
