Previously we addressed how noncustodial parents can utilize video conferencing to bond with their children in other states at every stage of childhood.  There are many options from which to choose when deciding which video conference program works best for you and your child.  When deciding, consider if you will be at home or away when having most of your contact.  This is important because you will either need to use a smartphone or tablet with internet and video for home or away or a desktop computer with internet, webcam and microphone for strictly home use.  Some programs can only be used with certain devices.  For instance, FaceTime can only be used by Apple users.  Also, consider the costs of each option.  While many programs are free, the data usage is not.  Home internet access also has its cost and should be fast and dependable because you want all of your conferencing to go smoothly and not be interrupted by connection problems.

Tango (tango.me) is a free download for computers and mobile devices which allows free text messaging, video and phone calls.  Skype (skype.com) requires you and the person you are contacting to both download the software, but with free and low-cost features, and 2 million public hotspots worldwide, it is the oldest program.  Google Hangouts allows (plus.google.com/hangouts) up to ten people to connect at a time and, with its ability for video conferencing and photo sharing, is particularly popular among teens.  Viber (viber.com) requires a cel phone for usage, but it allows for free contact with any Viber user with any cellular carrier in any country.  Facebook users can enjoy Facebook Video Calling after setting up the free service.
